The last bastion of the once feared Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab, Kismayo fell after troops of the Somali National Army (SNA) and the pro-government Ras Kimboni Brigade supported by Kenyan AMISOM forces entered the port city on 02 October following a two month operation across southern Somalia which saw the liberation of villages and centres along a distance of 120km from Afmadow to Kismayo.
