U lipnju 2018. kabinet Unije odobrio je 43,38 milijardi ₹ (540 milijuna USD) za izgradnju 10 raketa GSLV Mk III u razdoblju od pet godina.&lt;br /&gt;

GSLV Mk III lansirao je CARE, indijski eksperimentalni modul za izvlačenje svemirske kapsule, Chandrayaan-2, drugu indijsku lunarnu misiju, a koristit će se za nošenje Gaganyaana, prve misije s posadom u okviru indijskog Programa ljudskih svemirskih letova. ISRO je u početku planirao dvije porodice lansera, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle za nisku Zemljinu orbitu i polarna lansiranja i veće Geosinkrono Satellite Launch Vehicle za korisne terete u geostacionarnu orbitu za prijenos (GTO). Vozilo je rekonceptualizirano kao snažniji lanser kako se mijenjao mandat ISRO-a. Ovo povećanje veličine omogućilo je lansiranje težih komunikacijskih i višenamjenskih satelita, buduća međuplanetarna istraživanja i bit će ocijenjena od ljudi za lansiranje misija s posadom. Razvoj GSLV Mk III započeo je početkom 2000-ih, a prvo lansiranje planirano je za 2009.-2010. Neuspješno lansiranje GSLV D3, zbog kvara u kriogenom gornjem stupnju, odgodilo je program razvoja GSLV Mk III. == Dizajn vozila ==&lt;br /&gt;
Prvi stupanj sastoji se od dva S200 solid motora, također poznatih kao Large Solid Boosters (LSB) pričvršćenih na jezgru. Svaki booster širok je 3,2 metra , dugačak 25 metara i nosi 207 tona pogonskog goriva na bazi polibutadiena s hidroksilnim završetkom (HTPB) u tri segmenta s kućištima izrađenima od maraging čelika M250. To je najveći pojačivač na kruto gorivo nakon Space Shuttlea SRB i Ariane 5 SRB. Fleksibilne mlaznice mogu se vektorirati do ±8° pomoću elektro-hidrauličkih pokretača koji rade u načinu ispuhivanja i koriste se za kontrolu vozila tijekom početne faze izrona. Hidraulička tekućina za rad ovih aktuatora pohranjuje se u vanjsko postavljenom cilindričnom spremniku na dnu svakog boostera. Drugi stupanj, označen L110, stupanj je na tekuće gorivo visok 21 metar i širok 4 metra i sadrži 110 metričkih tona nesimetričnog dimetilhidrazina (UDMH) i dušikovog tetroksida ( N2O4). Pokreću ga dva motora Vikas 2, od kojih svaki stvara potisak od 766 kilonewtona , što daje ukupni potisak od 1.532 kilonewtona. L110 je prvi indijski klasterni motor na tekuće gorivo. Motori Vikas koriste regenerativno hlađenje, osiguravajući poboljšanu težinu i specifični impuls u usporedbi s ranijim indijskim raketama. Svaki Vikas motor može se zasebno postaviti na kardan za kontrolu nagiba, skretanja i okretanja vozila. Jezgreni stupanj L110 pali se 114 sekundi nakon polijetanja i gori 203 sekunde. Kriogeni gornji stupanj, označen C25, promjera je 4 metra  i dugačak 13,5 metara i sadrži 28 metričkih tona pogonskog goriva LOX i LH2, pod tlakom helija pohranjenog u potopljenim bocama. Pokreće ga jedan motor CE-20, koji proizvodi 200 kN (45 000 lbf) potiska.
